Is opening the door to immigration a viable solution to the problems of an aging society in Japan?

Japan has an aging population that poses a problem for the nation's economy in the 21st century. Is opening the door to immigration a viable solution? Consider the US's policy on immigration and its recent reaction to illegal immigration, what advice would you give the Japanese authorities before legislating immigration laws? What sort of people might apply  to live and work in Japan? Why?
