Japanese Bathroom

This video shows a high end bathroom, washroom/shower, and kitchen in a suburban Japanese house.  Note the high tech, and enironmentally features of both the bathroom and the washroom.  Japanese houses typically don't have central heat, making the high end features of the heated floor in the shower room and the heated toilet seat very desirable.  (Note, most Japanese houses to not have heated floors, this is a very special, custom built feature of this house.)

Note the use of a separate set of toilet slippers for the bathrrom.  Can you students think of where this custom may have come from?  (In the old days, many bathrooms had dirt floors, so the families did not want the dirt from the toilet room brought in the house.  These days, it would be extremely rare to find a bathroom with a dirt floor in Japan.)

Note also that the bath and the toliet are in separate rooms, which is fairly typical in Japanese houses.  The shower and bathtub are separate as well.  Bathing customs are very important in Japan.  People clean themselves in the shower before entering the hot bath.  It is typical for family members to soak in the hot bath for a fair amount of time, especially in winter.  To save water and time, the family will share the same bathwater, which is why everyone cleans themselves before entering the tub.

The ktichen in this house is fancier than a typical Japanese kitchen.
