Japanese Entryway
A typical entryway in a Japanese home. What furniture is similar to entryways in your home? What is different? In Japan, people typically remove their shoes upon entering a home. There is also, in houses, typically a step up to enter the area of the house that indicates a separation between the genkan, or entry room (where you leave your shoes), and the main house. What other functions might the genkan serve? In most houses, it is an area that can also be used to meet outsiders who are not being fully admitted into the home.
