Australian based guide to utilizing the web to teach about Asia, including specific ideas for Japan related webquests.
 
Features numerous curriculum resources, including materials for in class use, a newsletter, information about California teaching standards and teaching about Asia, and professional development opportunities.  Site maintained by the US-China Insitute of the University of Southern California.  An older version of the site, hosted at UCLA, also includes lesson plans. 
 
Asia for Educators
An initiative of the East Asian Curriculum Project and the Project on Asia in the Core Curriculum at Columbia University, Asia for Educators (AFE) contains numerous resources and links for teaching about Japan (as well as other areas of Asia).
 
Maintained by Asia Society, the site includes numerous lesson plans, maps, and other resources useful in the classroom.

Asian Educational Media Service
Extensive information about multimedia resources about East Asia, including an online database with more than 5000 records for DVDs, video cassettes, and curriculum units about East Asia with audio visual components.  Based out of the University of Illinois.

Asian Odyssey: A National K-12 Interdisciplinary Curriculum Model
Created by the Cleveland Museum of Art, the site includes numerous teaching ideas and resources for using visual arts as an access point to teach about Asia.

Association for Asian Studies
The Association for Asian Studies (AAS)—the largest society of its kind, with approximately 7,000 members worldwide—is a scholarly, non-political, non-profit professional association open to all persons interested in Asia.

Center for Japanese Studies at the University of Michigan
Information  on how to receive their free Japan Kits, a collection of materials to use in the classroom to explore aspects of culture and life in Japan.  Also links to more useful web resources for educators.

Expanding East Asian Studies (ExEAS), A Program of Columbia University
Contains numerous sophisticated resources and teaching ideas for teaching about East Asia. Although generally aimed at a university level audience, many of the materials can provide valuable background knowledge and, with modification, useful ideas for lesson plans and classroom activities.

Freer and Sackler Galleries, “Online Guides for Teachers”
Taking advantage of the rich Japan collection of the Freer and Sackler Galleries, the site offers lesson plans and other resources for using art to teach about Japan. The site also includes teaching guides for other world areas. 
 
Created at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, this site feature practical materials for teaching about Japan in geography, world history, and physical science survey courses.
 
Korea Society Resources for Teachers   
Numerous downloadable multimedia and print files, including lesson plans, for teaching about Korea.

Site includes access to curricular materials for teaching about Asia.  Of particular use are the sections "Teaching about East Asia," "Windows on Asia," and "Outreach."
 
This organization provides professional development opportunities for K-12 teachers nationwide to teaching about Asia, including Japan.  Teachers who complete their courses are often eligible to go on study tours of East Asia.

Program for Teaching East Asia: University of Colorado
Imaging Japan Online Curriculum offers free online modules focusing on a period in Japanese history, providing introductory essays by well known scholars and interactive lessons that engage students in "reading" works of art as historical texts in order to better understand the period.  The site also contains information about professional development programs offered at the University of Colorado for teachers nationwide, as well as a variety of resources to teaching about Japan, China, and Korea.
