This picture illustrates some of the contrasts in the Yoshiwara district, the former pleasure quarters of Tokyo. During the Tokugawa era (1600-1868), this area was the official pleasure quarters of Japan. In contemporary Japan, prostitution is illegal. However, this district remains well known for its night life and adult themed entertainment. the park pictured here is right in front of a street dedicated to adult entertainment, as is most of the area surrounding the park. The picture can provide both a good illustration of the contrasts within Tokyo as well as a take off point for discussion or even as a starting point for a creative writing exercise.
