Cell Phone Decoration

Cell phones, or keitai denwa, are ubiquitous in Japan these days.  Many have video, high-definition cameras and internet capabilities, while some can also be used as credit or debit cards in select stores and train stations and yet others can be used to watch TV.   The usefulness and prevalence of these machines has led to a "keitai culture," and the model and accessories are often indicative of the self-image the owner wants to put forth.  Cute cell phone straps are popular, often one phone has multiple straps, and young people often cover their phones in rhinestone-like gems (see above) or small sticker-photos of their friends.  The popularity of the phones has even led to the development of "cell phone novels," which are extremely popular amongst teens.  The extensive use of cell phones raises questions such as why cell phone culture became adopted so much more quickly in Japan than the US?  What influences do students think the extensive use of cell phones, including for viewing movies, TV, and novels, has on the way these forms are produced and understood?
