Child Seat

As concerns about health and the environment permeate the American media, many people wonder why Japan's rate of obesity is lower than that of the United States.  Of course, diet is one key factor.  However, the integration of physical activity into Japanese lifestyle also plays an important role.  This photograph, taken in Obu-city, a suburb of Nagoya, in July 2010, illustrates a row of bicycles parked by the side of the street.  A seemingly mundane detail, the baby seat in the back and the shopping basket in the front, points to the central role bicycle transport plays in the daily activities of this family.  Scenes such as this are typical in Japan.
