The arrival of cherry blossoms (or sakura) are an important part of Japanese culture.  Symbolizing new beginnings and hope, their fleeting beauty is also a key characteristic.  While they are in bloom, people gather and socialize under the trees for hanami, or cherry-viewing parties.  Yozakura, or viewing cherry blossoms at night, is also popular.
