Homeless man in Tokyo
Despite the size of Japan's economy, homelessness has been an increasing problem, especially in the early 21st century. While Japan has an image as a society without extremes of wealth and poverty, a small group of people who have fallen outside the social safety net exist. This homeless man, photographed in 2007, is sleeping on a sidewalk in a relatively wealthy section of the Asakusa district of Tokyo on a warm Autumn day.
