This picture is of the second-day of the Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament. Attendance is down significantly as the sumo world suffers from a recent illegal gambling scandal involving some sumo wrestlers, their managers and yakuza (Japanese criminal organizations). For the first time in 57 years, NHK (Japan’s national public broadcasting network) has canceled live coverage of the tournament. Many corporate sponsors who usually support popular sumo matches were not visible.. McDonald's stood out as the most visible sponsor of the tournament. The picture of McDonald's as the main sponsor can offer a good opportunity to discuss the relationship between American and Japanese culture, as well as consideration of how traditional Japanese culture remains financially viable today.
