Rice Cultivation 1963
Man tossing out seedlings about 8" high. In Ohara, outside of Kyoto, in the fall of 1963. Questions students can consider, often using other web based resources:
1. How does this method or rice cultivation compare with current methods in Japan?
2. How does this method compare to methods in the United States?
3. Have the students describe the geography of the field as an introduction to wet rice agriculture and terraced farming (in the background). Ask why Japan would use terraced farming? (Terraced farming is the method in which farmers create man made plateus, or terraces, up a mountainside, in order to cultivate the hillsides.)
