The Bentendori Quarter

The Bentendori Quarter

The Bentendori Quarter was a center for shopping in Yokohama, specializing in the sale of decorative and expensive goods. The photo was taken September 8, 1923.  One can notice that varied styles of dress at this time. To the left there is a man wearing traditional dress. To the right there is a man riding a bike wearing traditional western dress. Western culture was expanding greatly to Japan and this photo shows a great contrast between new and old Japanese culture.

This photo may be dated incorrectly. The date indicates that the picture was taken one week after the 1923 earthquake that struck off the shore of Yokohama.
