Wind Turbines

Wind Turbines

These wind turbines have been built on a mountaintop in the rural Arida District of Wakayama Prefecture, an area well known for tangerine farming and fishing. You can have students locate Arida, Wakayama Prefecture on a map, and guess as to why it is a good location for wind turbines. (Located along a seaside ridge, the area has fairly consistent wind. As can be seen by the picture of terraced farming, it is also clear that the land on which the turbines is built is not useful for either agriculture or housing. In addition, rural areas in Japan are seeking new revenues to diversify their economies.) The use of wind energies also points to the emphasis in Japan on "green" energy solutions.
