Illustration of first Japanese Parliament

Illustration of first Japanese Parliament

Reproduced from a Japanese engraving, this picture illustrates the first Japanese Parliament, which opened November 29, 1890.  The writing at the top indicates that it is an "Imperial Diet" and the figure sitting at the back of the podium is the Meiji Emperor.  Students should also note the clothing styles of the Diet members as well as those of the audience in the gallery, and the ornate, European style furnishings.
