View of Minami Sanriku-cho

View of the valley in Minami Sanriku-cho, Miyagi Prefecture, taken from a junior high school located on a hill over 130 feet above sea level.  The picture illustrates both the incredible destruction of the tsunami that struck the town on March 11, 2011 as well as the natural beauty of the area.  Before the tsunami, most of the valley was filled with buildings, including many residences.

In this picture, taken in late July, 2011, students can see that much of the debris had been cleared from the valley, but reconstruction had not begun in earnest.  For a discussion of the complicated issues involved in rebuilding, students can read this New York Times article from September 12, 2011.  For an illustration of an area where rebuilding had begun, students can view this picture of a flower shop reopening in July 2011.
